Fully-Insured/ACA Compliant
Fully insured group health insurance is usually considered to be the most “traditional” and they are “ACA compliant” because they meet the minimum essential health benefits as described by the Affordable Care Act. The different plans can vary when it comes to copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.
The Essentials Health Benefits that all Fully-Insurance plans must include:
- Ambulatory patient services (outpatient care you get without being admitted to a hospital)
- Emergency services
- Hospitalization (like surgery and overnight stays)
- Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care (both before and after birth)
- Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment (this includes counseling and psychotherapy)
- Prescription drugs
- Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices (services and devices to help people with injuries, disabilities, or chronic conditions gain or recover mental and physical skills)
- Laboratory services
- Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
- Pediatric services, including oral and vision care (but adult dental and vision coverage aren’t essential health benefits)
Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement
ICHRA (Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement) is a way for companies to give employees a set amount of money to spend on their own individual health insurance plans. Instead of offering one company-wide plan, employees can choose their own plans that fit their needs, and the company reimburses them for the cost up to a certain limit. This gives employees more flexibility to choose the health insurance plan that makes the most sense for their specific needs.
Level-Funded
Level-funded plans are a different type of health insurance for small businesses that want to reduce costs while still offering good coverage to their employees. Unlike traditional plans, they are not community rated, involve a medical underwriting process to help determine costs, and can potentially lower a group’s fixed costs if the group qualifies.
